Ceramic (porcelain) Veneers
Ceramic veneers are thin, custom-made ‘shells’, usually made of porcelain, which are permanently bonded to the front of your teeth. If teeth are broken, chipped, stained, or have large gaps, veneers can improve aesthetics.
Because tooth preparation is minimal, the tooth remains strong. A thin layer of enamel is removed to provide room for the veneer, so that the natural tooth form can be replicated. An impression is taken and the veneer is made by a dental technician and fitted by the dentist. While the veneer is being made, temporary veneers are placed.
The whole process usually takes only two visits. Being ceramic, veneers are more resistant to staining than composite filling material. With careful planning they may last up to 12 years.
Tooth whitening
This is one of the simplest ways to enhance your appearance. Without changing the structure of the tooth, a bleaching agent (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) is used to lighten the colour of your teeth.
Crowns
A dental crown completely covers the natural crown of your tooth.
Crowns for front teeth are generally made of ceramic material. They are used on teeth with large fillings, deeply discoloured teeth or teeth that need to be protected from further breakdown.
Crowns on back teeth are generally used to protect the remaining tooth from breaking. Teeth with large fillings and/or root-filled teeth are weak. These teeth may have cracks that may cause sensitivity to hot and cold and biting pressure – or they may have no symptoms at all. Crowning these teeth reinforces the structure and prevents the tooth from breaking.
These crowns are generally made of a ceramic or a ceramic bonded to an underlying metal for strength. If aesthetics are not an issue, gold can be used. The bonus of gold is that it can be used in very thin sections, so that relatively little tooth needs to be removed during preparation.
